The field lay green. Schoolchildren played
happily in teams for games
with shouts and laughter.   No-one stayed
the hand of progress.   Other claims

upon the land would count for more
than caring for the neighbourhood.
Buyer and vendor knew the score;
that land meant cash was understood

and acted on.   Soon JCBs
trenched through the grass.   Upon the spoils
workmen spread bricks like a disease
and houses rose like inflamed boils

across the site.   But there may still
be hidden hands to play.   One day,
let's hope, enduring nature will
creep back and heal them all away.
